Our annual Rock-N-Run festivities are tomorrow at 1:00.  I emailed the times to everyone who gave me their email. :)  If you need them please comment. below.

Go Saxons!

The end of October is fast approaching and we have a lot of important happenings.  This Friday is our annual Rock-N-Run festivities in the morning.  We will have those activities int he gym due to the weather.  Our Halloween party will be Thursday October 31 at 2:00.  Check out the newsletter for more information on that.  Also, our reading log for October is due on the 31st as well.

If you have any questions please let me know. :)

I wanted to touch base about homework and your reading logs.

Homework isn't due until Friday of each week.  I realize that most of us have very busy lives, so Mrs. Bovee and I have decided instead of having nightly homework we would have weekly homework.  Your student is welcome to complete their math homework any night and keep it in their folder, however, the spelling should be done nightly.  Hopefully, by doing small tasks with their spelling words nightly, the kiddos will pick up on how to spell their words.

Reading logs are due at the end of each month.  It is expected that each student read 180 minutes or more :) to receive a Pizza Hut certificate.

Have a great week!

My first grade friend Lauren Cook was our very first student of the month this year.  She showed great responsibility and other wonderful traits!  I am very pleased with her willingness to help her friends, her great attitude and her hard work!  Congratulations, Lauren!

I've had a few parents ask me about recess time and center time in first grade.  In first grade and the other upper grades, we only get one recess which is their lunch recess.  We are very lucky because our lunch and recess times really help break up our day.  We do lots of hands on learning in first grade, but we do not do center time like kindergarten.  We use our subject times for moving and we take lots of brain breaks. We also have our special time in the afternoon that helps with the amount of learning we do in first grade. :)  I understand the concern that some may be having with not enough "running or moving around" time, but in  first grade the expectations and the amount that a first grader does is very high.  If time is allowed, we always try to give a extra recess, but I am always amazed at how well most of my students adjust to the switch from kindergarten to first grade.  The kiddos love learning new things so as teachers we work very hard to make sure your kiddo gets the movement they need. :)

I wanted to touch base with my parents about my expectations for your kiddos during library time.  I am hoping that since your kiddo has had kindergarten for a full year that they know to choose a good-fit book.  I want them to be reading their library book to you.  So I have asked them NOT to be checking out Junie B. Jones or similar books right now as we are working on our fluenc

We are working hard at building our stamina during read to self time.  We have been talking about naming the characters and the setting or where the story takes place.  We have been able to read for 16 minutes!  Ask your kiddo about the characters and setting when they are reading to you!

We learned about Entomology today with our specail friend Mrs. DeHoog!  Entomology is the study of insects.  The students are always very excited when Mrs. DeHoog comes to our room.  She teaches us different ways to draw pictures and today we drew our favorite insect.

Just a few friendly reminders to send a healthy snack each day with your kiddo to school.  I know we are running a bit low.  Also, the end of the school year is fast approaching.  I can't believe how time flies when  you are having such a great time learning!  I hope that you have seen you student grow over the past 6 plus months of school like I have. :)  Remember, if you have any questions send me a quick email! Have a great week and hopefully the rain stops.
